From April 9-11, 2015, two of my fellow Teen Court volunteers, the Teen Court volunteer coordinator, and I traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive the Youth Leadership for Service-Learning Excellence Award from the National Youth Leadership Council. It was an all-expenses paid trip funded by NYLC. During the conference, my peers and I not only had the honor of being presented with the award (left), but also presented a workshop about Teen Court to a group of people from all over the world. Our presentation explained the purpose of Teen Court, our efforts to combat crime among adolescents, and the benefits for both defendants and volunteers. This experience was extremely beneficial in that it spread awareness of the effectiveness of diversion programs in mitigating youth crime and negative behaviors such as youth substance abuse.
